Elon vs. William & Mary Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 3-4-2023

With the CAA Tournament underway, we get to see a third battle between the Elon Phoenix (8-23, 0-0-0 ATS, 6-12 CAA) and the William & Mary Tribe (12-19, 0-0-0 ATS, 7-11 CAA). The home team took the win by double digits and beat the spread in the first two meetings. These schools haven't met in the CAA Tournament since 2020 when Elon pulled off a stunning upset to end the Tribe's season. Well, it is March, so seasons are on the line once again. With a noon start in DC's Entertainment & Sports Arena, let's see who will keep their CAA title hopes alive.

The Phoenix rose from the ashes in March, rattling off six CAA win in an eight-game span after an 0-8 start to conference play and a 2-19 start to the season. One of those wins even came against William & Mary. However, KenPom's 329th-ranked team dropped their final two, one of which came against the Tribe.

The other loss was their finale against Delaware, falling at home 70-54. Despite an uncharacteristically high 35.7% shooting from three, Elon trailed for the entire second half of the contest. Senior Sean Halloran dropped 15 in the defeat.

I mentioned their three-point shooting was unusually high because normally, they only hit 30.3%, a rate that's 343rd in the nation. Overall, they shoot 42.7%, which isn't great but is more respectable. Elon averages 65.9 points per game.

Their defense allows 71.6 per contest on 43.7% shooting, which doesn't mask th eir offensive problems. Again, the three-point line is an issue, as they allow opposing teams to hit 34.2% of triples. Their rebounding margin was -2.0 per game this season, but they outrebounded William & Mary in both contests.
