After beating Purdue, Penn State, Minnesota and Northwestern at home, Maryland is a lock to make the NCAA Tournament with a 21 NCAA Net Ranking and a 10-9 record against Quad 1 & 2 teams. They are playing for a higher seed in the NCAA Tournament and in next week's Big 10 Tournament, which has them tied for four teams for second place. The key for the Terps is getting a top-four seed to avoid playing in the first two rounds. In their last game, they were able to pummel Northwestern 75-59 on Senior Day. Guard Jahmir Young led the way with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting, while center Julian Reese added 12 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. The Terps shot 54% from the field and 14-of-22 from beyond the arc (64%).
Young has been an excellent pickup for Maryland, coming over from Charlotte. He's shooting 43.3% from the field and 31.6% from beyond the arc, averaging 16.2 points. In the last s even games, he is shooting 49.3% from the field and 39.2% from long range.
Maryland's biggest issue has been shooting the three-pointer, though it's starting to improve. After ranking near the bottom for weeks in the Big 10, the Terps now rank 9th (32.4%) out of 14 teams and they rank 4th in defending the three-point shot (31.4%). They rank 7th in field goal defense (42.1%) and seventh in rebounding margin (+2.4). They also rank 5th in turnover margin (1.31) and 11th in assist/turnover ratio (1.09).
