UMBC was a 20.5-point underdog against Virginia in the First Round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament.

The No. 16-seed Retrievers trailed by six points, 16-10, with just over six minutes remaining in the first half before outscoring the No. 1-seed Cavaliers by 28 points the remainder of the game en route to a 20-point win, 74-54. It was the first – and still only – win by a 16-seed in the tournament history.

It was the second-biggest March Madness betting upset of all time (by spread); only Norfolk State won – over Missouri in 2012 – as a bigger underdog (+21).
