The Golden Eagles are now in a first-place tie with Marshall with just one regular season game remaining, but the Thundering Herd own the tiebreaker advantage with their 89-67 win over the Golden Eagles earlier this season. USM now needs a win versus Texas State and a Marshall loss at Old Dominion on Friday to win the Sun Belt.

On Wednesday, Old Dominion erased a seven-point halftime deficit to take down Southern Mississippi 69-64. The Monarchs shot 41.5 percent overall and held the Golden Eagles to 33.3 percent. They also won the rebounding battle 42-36 and knocked down 20 of 27 free-throw attempts. USM was 10-for-31 (32.3%) from deep and 14-for-25 at the charity stripe (56%) in the stunning road loss. Senior forward Felipe Haase paced the Golden Eagles with 18 points and five assists .

Southern Mississippi scores 74.5 points per game (119th) and shoots 45.9 percent from the field (104th) with a 32.6 three-point shooting percentage (267th). The Golden Eagles convert 70.1 percent of their free-throw attempts (232nd) and average 33.8 rebounds (72nd) with a +3.0 rebounding margin.
