Southern Miss (24-5 SU, 17-9 ATS, 13-3 SBC) travels to Norfolk to take on Old Dominion (17-11 SU, 14-12-1 ATS, 9-7 SBC) in a Sun Belt Conference game on Wednesday night at 7pmET at the TED.
These brand-new Sun Belt Conference teams did meet in January of 2020 with ODU winning 68-58 on the road so this is their first matchup as conference foes. At the time, both teams were members of Conference USA.
Southern Miss, at 79 in the latest NCAA Net Rankings, doesn't have the resume' to earn an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament. What they do have is a talented team who has won 10 of their last 11 games. That includes a home win over Georgia Southern on Feb. 18 73-62 as a 9.5-point favorite. The Golden Eagles were led by Neftali Alvarez, who made five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 19 points. Southern Miss finished its home schedule with a 15-0 record to tie their 2011-12 team for the most home wins in program history. They also held the Georgia Southern Eagles to just 37% shooting and 27% (6-of-22) from long range.

The Southern Miss defense has been a bit spotty this season, allowing teams to shoot 42.5% (5th in SBC) and 33.2% (7th) from three-point range. Offensively, they struggle from three-point range (32.3%), though they rank 4th in the league in field goal percentage (45.1%). What they do really well is protect the basketball, as they rank third in turnover margin (0.94) and in assist/turnover ratio (1.20). They also rank 3rd in rebounding margin (+1.5).
Guard Austin Crowley leads the Golden Eagles in scoring with 16.3 points per game on 47.5% shooting (36.3% 3pt). Forward Felipe Haase adds 14.7 points per game on 47.% shooting (40.8% 3pt) and 6.3 rebounds.
