Cal Poly Mustangs (7-17) vs. UC Irvine Anteaters (15-8)

The 2022-23 NCAA men’s basketball season continues Thursday, February 9, with the Cal Poly Mustangs taking on the UC Irvine Anteaters in the Big West Conference showdown at Bren Events Center in Irvine, California.  

Cal Poly and UC Irvine lock horns for the first time this season, and the Anteaters have won ten of their previous 11 encounters with the Mustangs. UC Irvine opens as a 13-point home fave with a total of 130.5 points, so let’s take a closer look.  

The Cal Poly Mustangs (7-17; 12-10 ATS) have dropped 11 straight games and are sitting bottom of the Big West Conference with a 1-11 record in the league play. Last week, the Mustangs lost at UC Santa Barbara 68-62 as 15-point road dogs and to Hawaii 69-56 as 7.5-point home underdogs. 

Cal Poly hosted the Rainbow Warriors this past Saturday, and senior forward Alimamy Koroma led the way for the Mustangs with 17 points and three rebounds. Junior forward Brantly Stevenson notched 12 points and four boards, while junior guard Kobe Sanders had ten points and a couple of assists and blocks. Cal Poly made just 39.6% of its field goals (2-for-13 from deep) and posted a 9/8 assist-to-turnover ratio. 

The Mustangs are dead last in the Big West Conference in points scored per game (57.7). They are tenth in 3-point percentage (28.9%) and seventh in 2-point percentage (48.0%). Per KenPom, the Mustangs tally 95.3 points per 100 possessions (343rd in the nation) while surrendering 107.2 points in return (220th) on 34.1% shooting from beyond the arc (218th). Cal Poly is No. 313 in both KenPom rankings and NCAA NET Rankings.
