Tuesday NHL Best Bet, Monday Recaps

Monday was spent mostly on a mix of some chores around the Tuley’s Take home office (and taking my son to Las Vegas Youth Orchestra practice) and also continuing to track the Super Bowl odds including going over the ever-increasing list of proposition bets at the sportsbooks.

I also did some work on the VSiN Help Desk, so check that out or submit your own question.

The Super Bowl point spread remained a consensus of Eagles -1.5 over the Chiefs but continued to trend slightly upward as Treasure Island joined South Point at Eagles -2 with BetMGM going to Eagles -1.5 -115. The Over/Under also moved higher as 51 took over at the majority of Las Vegas books.

As for the props, we agree with what Mitch and Pauly were saying on “Follow the Money” on Tuesday morning that we’re also continually amazed at the creativity of the oddsmakers with the proposition wagers. I stand by the four props I have posted at the bottom of these daily columns as my strongest plays, but it’s so tempting to go down the rabbit hole with so many options offered nowadays. I’ve really been trying to keep the majority of my bankroll on my strongest plays but I have enough of a degenerate streak that I know it’s going to be hard to not have these other bets add up to more than I should be betting just because it’s the last football game until August (actually, that’s not true as we have the XFL and USFL coming up soon, but we’ll cross those bridges in the coming weeks).

Twitter follower @DavidAI61763893 posted “You should let people know to look at the fine print on props. On “double result,” my online book has overtime NOT included in the bet.” My initial thought is that this should go without saying, but it’s a good reminder that we all need to closely read the wording of the props we’re betting to make sure we know exactly what we’re putting our money on.

As for the “double result” prop David mentioned, he added that his book included a “halftime tie/regulation tie” option to the index prop, which is like the zero on the roulette wheel (or a draw bet in soccer) as it gives another way to lose the way I’ve always bet it. I would find another book on that prop.

As for Monday’s Best Bet, we lost our First-Period Over 1.5 play on the return of the NHL from the All-Star Break as Canucks-Devils came through but the Ducks-Stars came up short.

Let’s recap the rest of Monday’s (full-game) action, and look for some better Best Bets on Tuesday. Then, as has been our custom here, we’ll rerun our NFL “takes” column from Wednesday with our early Super Bowl bets including some related props.
