Chicago Bears vs. Detroit Lions Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 1-1-2023

The (3-12) Chicago Bears and (7-8) Detroit Lions will take the field on Sunday for an NFC North clash. The Bears, 1-6 on the road this season, lost 35-13 to Buffalo in their last game. The Lions, 4-4 at home, lost 37-23 to the Panthers last week. In their previous meeting on Nov. 13, the Lions pulled out a 31-30 road victory at Soldier Field. Trailing by 14 in the fourth quarter, Detroit rallied to overcome a memorable performance from Bears quarterback Justin Fields.

Kickoff from Ford Field is at 1:00 p.m. ET. The Lions are six-point spread favorites, and the game total is 52 points scored.

The Bears are destined for a high draft pick, but there were glimmers of hope this season. This was primarily due to the play of second-year starting QB Justin Fields, who has accumulated 3,178 total yards and 24 total touchdowns. Keeping the Ohio State product healthy and giving him more playmakers will be areas of emphasis this off-season.

The Bears led Buffalo 10-6 at halftime last week but couldn't hold off the Bills in the second half. Buffalo relied on its run game to outlast the Bears, as Devin Singletary and James Cook ran for long touchdowns. The Bills flipped the script, winning the second half 29-3 en route to victory. Fields passed for 119 yards and a TD but was held to a season-low 11 rushing yards.

“The reality of it is I’m not going to be running for like 100 yards a game,” he said.

The Lions should take that comment with a grain of salt, though, considering they allowed 147 rushing yards and two rushing scores to the QB in their first meeting this year.

The Bears are scoring 20.2 points and averaging 316.3 total yards per game, including an NFL-best 179.7 rushing yards and an NFL-worst 136.5 passing yards. Chicago is ranked 7th in third down conversion percentage (42.9%) and 14th in red zone touchdown scoring percentage (55.3%).

The Chicago defense surrenders 26.2 points and 360.3 total yards per game, including 151.2 rushing yards and 209.1 passing yards. The Bears are dead-last in opponent third down conversion percentage (49.7%) and 28th in opponent red zone touchdown scoring percentage (64.7%). Chicago has forced 21 turnovers, the tenth-most in the league.
