Jalen Hurts injury: What it means for Week 16 and the NFL MVP race

Adam Schefter says Hurts likely out for Sunday against Cowboys

Jalen hurts. Literally. Hurts went into Week 15 as the NFL MVP favorite and had a solid showing in the win over the Chicago Bears with three rushing touchdowns and 315 passing yards, but the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback hurt his non-throwing shoulder in the second half. That puts Gardner Minshew in line to start this week against the Dallas Cowboys, as the Eagles have the chance to lock up the NFC East and also the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

Hurts is highly unlikely to play this week, but his status is in doubt for the rest of the regular season as well. At 13-1, the Eagles don’t really need to play him and will have no reason to play him in the remaining two games. As a result, the NFL MVP odds have shifted, making Patrick Mahomes the overwhelming favorite.

Week 16: Eagles at Cowboys

The Cowboys moved from -2 to -6 with the news about Hurts. The total peaked as high as 51, but is mostly sitting 46.5 now, so we’ve seen an adjustment there as well. Minshew made two starts last season, one in place of Hurts and one when Hurts rested in Week 18. He was 20-of-25 for 242 yards and two touchdowns in a very emotional win over the New York Jets in Week 13. He was 19-of-33 for 186 yards with two touchdowns and a pick in the 51-26 loss to the Cowboys in Week 18, but the Eagles rested a bunch of guys on both sides of the ball.

Minshew has only thrown four passes this season and only has two completions. He is a much different player than Hurts, something that DraftKings Director of Race and Sportsbook Operations Johnny Avello talked about on Follow The Money this morning.
