The Washington Capitals face the Edmonton Oilers with both teams looking to improve from rocky starts to the season. The Capitals have a 10-12-4 record and with only three wins in their last 10 games, have fallen to the bottom of the Metropolitan Division. The Oilers have a 14-11 record and are in the middle of the Pacific Division. Both teams are looking to improve in their divisions and the upcoming game looks to be a good one as a result.

The Capitals are having a rough season with their offense struggling immensely, scoring only 2.73 goals per game with only four goals in the last two games. Alexander Ovechkin, Dylan Strome, and Evgeny Kuznetsov have scored 21 goals and 40 assists to lead the top two lines but the rest of the offense has struggled. Only four skaters have scored six goals or more while only five skaters have eight assists or more and opposing defensive can limit the top-heavy offense as a result.

The offense has let the Capitals down but the defense has also struggled, allowing 3.12 goals per game. Nick Jensen and Martin Fehervary have combined for 3.1 defensive point shares but the rest of the unit has struggled, allowing opponents to carry the puck into the offensive zone and find open shots on the net. The bright spot has been the play of goaltender Darcy Kuemper who has a .916 save percentage and a 2.56 goals-against average on 570 shots.
