It’s a battle of foes from the West Division of the Big Ten on the gridiron when a pair of teams meet in the Hoosier State. The Northwestern Wildcats are on the road as they travel to face the Purdue Boilermakers Saturday afternoon. Northwestern comes in after being knocked off a 31-3 pasting on the road by Minnesota in their previous contest last Saturday, failing to cover as a 17-point underdog. Purdue upended #21 Illinois 31-24 on the road, winning outright as a 6.5-point underdog last Saturday. In the all-time series between the programs, the Boilermakers own a 52-33-1 advantage, including a 32-14 win at Wrigley Field in the most recent matchup on November 20, 2021.

Northwestern dropped their ninth straight game since their season-opening victory over Nebraska in Ireland as they were drubbed by Minnesota last week on the road. The Wildcats dropped to 1-9 overall and stand at the bottom of the Big Ten West with a 1-6 record. Against Minnesota, Northwestern couldn’t find the end zone as they were down 7-0 after the opening quarter and 14-3 at the half. The Wildcats couldn’t score again, getting blanked 17-0 in the second half en route to the loss. Northwestern was outgained 366-278 in total offense, gave up 22 first downs while picking up 10, turned the ball over twice while forcing one takeaway and was dominated 40:22 to 19:38 in time of possession in the contest.

The Wildcats average 227.9 yards per game (71st in the FBS) through the air and 118.5 yards per game (105th) on the ground. Northwestern averages 15.3 points (128th of the 131 teams in the FBS to play this season in scoring offense) and give up 28.2 points (84th in the nation in scoring defense) per contest. Ryan Hlinski is 144 of 258 passing for 1,644 yards with six touchdowns and seven interceptions on the season. Brendan Sullivan (71 of 96, 589 yards, four touchdowns, three interceptions, 97 rushing yards, TD), Carl Richardson (three of nine, 39 yards, INT) and Cole Freeman (one of three, seven yards, 16 rush yards) have seen action as well. Evan Hull is the lead back in the run game with 179 carries for 755 yards and four scores this season. Cam Porter (73 carries, 251 yards, two TD) is next in line when it comes to moving the chains with the ground attack. In the passing game, Malik Washington leads the team with 55 receptions for 616 yards and a score. Hull (50 grabs, 509 yards, two TD), Donny Navarro II (31 receptions, 237 yards, two TD) and Bryce Kirtz (19 catches, 212 yards) are all over the 200-yard receiving mar k this season. Adam Stage has hit all 17 extra point attempts and five of seven field goal attempts with a long of 35. Jake Olsen hit his lone extra point while misfiring on his lone field goal attempt on the year.
