Just fifteen games into their 2022-23 season and the Spurs have proved one thing, they will not roll over and start counting their ping pong balls in anticipation of the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes. Coach Gregg Popovich correctly predicted that the Spurs would not be competing for an NBA title this season but they are certainly not playing like a team competing for the NBA's next big thing. The Spurs have lost seven of eight and are certainly playing with a clear talent-deficit in nearly every matchup but they have invariably competed night in and night out. After a clunker against the Warriors, losing by 37 at Golden State, the Spurs rebounded to play a tight contest against the Blazers on Tuesday night on the road. Behind a career-high 31 points from Poeltl, the Spurs fought back from an early deficit to take as much as a six-point lead in the fourth quarter. He finished 14-of-17 from the field for the Spurs while providing quality interior defense.

San Antonio has lost seven of their last eight games following a 5-2 start to the season. They have been carried more by their offense than defense this season. The Spurs are 11th in the NBA in 3pt field goal percentage and are 15th in scoring. During the team's initial hot start, they were surprisingly near the top of the standings in assist-to-turnover ratio. However, the team's inexperience at the guard position has shown through and they are now down to 18th in the NBA in that category. The Spurs defense, however, has not been very effective thus far. The Spurs rank last in the NBA in points allowed, last in opponent's shooting percentage and 29th in opponent's 3pt shooting percentage.
