California Golden Bears (0-2) vs. UC-San Diego Tritons (0-2)

The 2022-23 NCAA men’s basketball schedule continues on Tuesday as the California Golden Bears travel to take on the UC-San Diego Tritons at LionTree Arena in San Diego, California.

This contest pits two early-season winless clubs, as California dropped their second straight game when they fell to Kansas State on Friday, 63-54. The Tritons also lost their second game of the season, falling to Sacramento State on Saturday, 65-55. These teams have played each other just once, with UC-San Diego defeating the Golden Bears back in November 2021, 80-67.

California found themselves trailing by 15 following the break, and were able to pull within a handful of points, but eventually lost to Kansas State, 63-54. The Golden Bears (0-2) dropped to 0-2 at home and are now 0-2-0 ATS. The club shot 40.4% from the field but hit only 5-18 (27.8%) of three-point attempts. This has been a sore spot early on, as the team is hitting only 28.2% of their attempts from beyond the arc.

“We dug too big of a hole in the first half,” Cal head coach Mark Fox said. “We're playing a lot of young guys and they made some errors – and they're going to make some errors – but I was proud of how we competed. I'm disappointed that we didn't find that competitive nature earlier. We lost to a good team out of the Big 12 and we have a lot of respect for their program.”

California was led by Devin Askew, who scored 17 points and added five rebounds. However, he turned the ball over six times as California committed 22 turnovers and 19 personal files. The Golden Bears are struggling offensively early on, averaging 59.5 points per game on 39.1% shooting.
