Georgia managed to come up with a season-opening victory as they took care of Western Carolina Monday night at home. The Bulldogs failed to cover the spread but a win is a step in the right direction for a program that finished the 2021-22 campaign with a dismal 6-26 record on the season. The Bulldogs have to prove they can win games on the road this season after going 0-10 as the visiting team last year. Getting a win in Mike White’s debut at least gives the team a little bit of momentum though we’ll see what they can do going forward. After all, Georgia was 47-75 overall and 15-57 in the SEC in the last four seasons under coach Tom Crean.

Against Western Carolina, it was a game of stops and starts for Georgia but they managed to do enough on both ends of the floor to earn the victory. The Bulldogs jumped all over Western Carolina early, taking an 11-3 lead out of the gate and never r elinquishing the lead after that. Georgia was up 15 at the half only to see the Catamounts rip off an 18-5 run to start the second half, slicing their advantage to 42-40 with 13 minutes to play. The Bulldogs saw Western Carolina make one more push as the lead was 50-46 with 8:50 to play before they took complete control with a 7-0 run. Georgia led 57-46 with 5:51 to play and didn’t let the lead drop below eight down the stretch. The Bulldogs shot 49.1% from the field, including three of 10 from three-point range, and won the rebounding battle 42-26 to help overcome 21 turnovers in the game. Kario Oquendo led Georgia with 18 points in the victory. Frank Anselem was the only other player for the Bulldogs in double figures as he added 11 in 13 minutes of play. Only two of Georgia’s starters logged more than 13 minutes in the victory.
