Monday's top early bets
In the only meeting between the North Carolina Tar Heels and Miami Hurricanes this regular season, the Tar Heels are favored despite being a worse team than the Hurricanes this year. Are the Tar Heels seeing love because of their name, their history, the fact that they're playing at home, or something else?
Whatever it is, it's a great spot to take the Hurricanes against the spread. Last season, the Hurricanes were 2.5-point underdogs and won by 28. It was their second consecutive cover against the Tar Heels and their third win against the spread in four tries.
The Hurricanes are never favored against the Tar Heels, despite playing them tough every time they go head-to-head. And this season, Miami is the flat-out better team. There's no line for this game yet, but taking the Hurricanes to win outright should be the play if this spread remains under 2.5.
The West Virginia Mountaineers are one of those teams that would clinch a spot in the NCAA Tournament if they weren't in the competitive Big 12. They're 15-10 overall and just 4-8 in conference play. Six of their eight conference losses were by single digits, including a 5-point loss earlier this season to the Baylor Bears.
Because the Texas Longhorns absolutely destroyed the Mountaineers Saturday, it's likely they'll be seriously undervalued Monday night. While they should be just 6-point underdogs, this line could be as high as 10 points at tipoff because they just lost by 34.
However, look beyond the loss against the Long horns. The Mountaineers won this season over the Auburn Tigers, Iowa State Cyclones, and TCU Horned Frogs. After this matchup against West Virginia, the Bears are on the road against the Kansas Jayhawks and Kansas State Wildcats. It's a prime look-ahead spot for them, and the Mountaineers are good enough to take advantage.
What will sportsbooks and oddsmakers do with the new-look L.A. Lakers? After acquiring point guard D'Angelo Russell, they were 5.5-point underdogs against the Golden State Warriors. Yet, the Lakers handed the Warriors their seventh home loss of the season. Will L.A. now be favored on the road against the Portland Trailblazers?
The Lakers already beat the Trail Blazers twice this season, including once in Portland. Both teams have been inconsistent throughout the year, but with how Lakers forward LeBron James played recently, and that the Blazers hold just a 15-13 home record this season, bet o n the Lakers. The opening line may favor Portland by a bucket, but that line should be reversed.
If the Lakers are favored, take them against the spread. If they're underdogs, take their moneyline.
