Open Championship Field and Course

Rory McIlroy won the 2014 Open Championship at Hoylake and Rickie Fowler finished runner-up. Those two are top challengers again along with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and No. 2 Jon Rahm, who figure to get more betting action on FanDuel Sportsbook. Outside of injured Will Zalatoris, every player in the top 60 of the world golf rankings is in the British Open 156-player field. That includes LIV Golfers Brooks Koepka and defendin g Open champion Cameron Smith, along with Dustin Johnson (No. 79). Some of the leading DP World Tour players to watch include Min Woo Lee, Ryan Fox, and Adrian Meronk, from the top 50 in the OWGR, along with Lucas Herbert and Victor Perez.

A new Par 3 hole at No. 17 awaits the players, and the course requires more strategically and accurately placed tee shots with fewer drivers to avoid the penal pot bunkers. Lush fescue, gorse bushes, and internal out-of-bounds border the fairways with the western edge of the course along the shoreline of River Dee and sand dunes on the SW portion of the course.

Open Championship Picks & Predictions

Links experience and players with accurate tee shots, solid ball striking and long iron play, creativity, and better ability to control trajectory should go well, especially if the wind picks up.

Viktor Hovland's strong strokes gained and stats profile only tell part of the 25-year-old Norwegian's story. He's top-6 in Tee-to-Green, Ball Striking, and Off-the-Tee and one of the most consistent total drivers. He's also an elite iron player from 175 yards and beyond 200 yards while also ranking top-10 from 125-175 yards. Hovland has proven he can handle and play in windy condi tions. Last year the humble Hovland had a share of the lead with McIlroy into the final round at St. Andrews only to shoot 74 and finish T-4. He also finished T-12 in his British Open debut at Royal St. George's in 2021 where Collin Morikawa won and showed his accuracy, making him a viable contender who is also excelling in Tee-to-Green, Ball Striking and Approach.

But add in this year's major championship finishes for Hovland of T-7 at The Masters, T-2 at the PGA Championship, T-19 at the U.S. Open plus a win at The Memorial last month and T-3 at The Players Championship, and Hovland could clearly be the one to win at Hoylake for his first major title.

McIlroy is a deserving favorite and major win contender, but Hovland's odds are more than three times gre ater.

Pick: Viktor Hovland to Win (+2200) and/or Top-10 Finish
