In reality, he was just chasing that bag full of SEC money.

With his exit, the Marcus Freeman era began with a loss to Oklahoma State in their bowl game that year. 2022 started off pretty rocky as well, with early embarrassing losses to Marshall and Stanford as huge favorites at home that had fans calling for Freeman's job before he could even move into South Bend. However, they managed to steady the ship as the season progressed, winning eight of their last 10 games to finish 9-4. Along the way, they picked up a notable win over No. 4 Clemson that soiled the Tigers chances at making the CFP.

They managed to end the year on a high note by defeating the South Carolina Gamecocks 45-38 in the Gator Bowl.
